The 2021 Venza is underpinned by the TNGAK platform shared with the RAV4, Camry, Avalon, and the new Highlander. The vehicle will be available exclusively with a hybrid powertrain coupled with the standard electronic on-demand all-wheel drive system.
The hybrid system is powered by the dynamic Force 2.5-liter engine working in sync with two electric motor generators in the front and a separate electric motor on the rear axle powering the rear wheels as required. It produces a total of 219 horsepower. Thanks to the instant torque delivery from the electric motors, the vehicle feels responsive and nimble in everyday driving.
A new lithium-ion battery with an optimized layout making the Venza more space-efficient, with enhanced performance and reduced charging times. The compact lithium-ion battery pack is installed directly underneath the rear seats and does not take up any passenger or cargo space.
DRIVING AND HANDLING
The standard electronic on-demand all-wheel drive system does not use a drive shaft to power the rear wheels, instead it employs a separate electric motor over the rear axle with no mechanical connection to the transmission. The system works seamlessly and transparently preemptively distributing up to 80% of driving force to the rear wheels, which helps suppress wheel slip during off the line starts.
Selectable Normal Eco and Sport driving modes let the driver adjust the powertrain to their preferred driving style; while the EV mode permits electric-only driving at low speeds for short distances. The amount of regenerative braking can be adjusted using a sequential shifting feature, which may be especially useful when driving in hilly areas.
The Dynamic Force Series in the Venza is a highly efficient Atkinson cycle unit that features Toyota’s G4S fuel injection system for enhanced output and reduced emissions, along with a variable cooling system with an electric water pump and an electric thermostat that further help improve engine efficiency.
The new Venza uses a McPherson strut suspension in the front and a multi-link set up in the rear. The suspension is optimally tuned to provide a high level of ride comfort and precise handling.
To further enhance stability and ride quality, the hybrid system can regulate the drive torque in response to variations in road surface and accelerator pedal input to suppress pitch motion of the vehicle under acceleration and deceleration. Venza’s handling is bolstered by the active cornering assist function that enhances the vehicle’s cornering ability by applying brake pressure to the front inner wheel helping to suppress understeer in certain situations.
The differential in the Hybrid transaxle uses a conical disc spring to control torque applied to the wheels to enhance acceleration and deceleration controllability when starting off or cornering. This also helps enhance steering performance at higher speeds straight-line stability and controllability on rough roads.
Suspension tuning resists road surface disturbances. Tire noise is reduced by a strategically placed insulation, and an acoustic glass windshield helps minimize wind noise. Thanks to numerous noise vibration and harshness reduction measures throughout the vehicle, the new Venza creates a calm and quiet cabin atmosphere allowing for easy conversation even at higher speeds.
Standard on all grades is the blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert as well as the latest Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 that includes a pre-collision system with daytime and low light pedestrian and vehicle detection along with daytime cyclists detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, as well as lane departure alert with steering assist and automatic high-beam.
